Guinness brewmaster Fergal Murray visited
Toronto recently to help celebrate 250 years of brewing at Guinness.
Obviously a man who knows his stouts and after tasting and reviewing several
Ontario stouts, here is what he had to say about the Granite’s stout.
"Very smooth, velvety texture. It's dry, but not bitter. Well
balanced."

New
Beer “Hopping Mad”
We are featuring a new
beer called Hopping Mad.
To be perfectly honest, this is not aimed at the
light beer drinkers.
It comes in at 6% alcohol and although it is very
aggressively
hopped it is well balanced with the malt.
It is cask
conditioned and since we always
have a lack of tap space it may be available
on a rotating basis.

Granite Gift Ideas
It is always a crazy time of year trying to find a

Facebook Group –

the group.
It has just started but it will be a good place
to post some
pictures or just to see what is going on at the Granite.
Granite Stout Drunken
BBQ Sauce and Ribs to Go
Granite Stout Drunken BBQ Sauce in 750 ml bottles is now
for sale at $7.95 per bottle. We are also offering racks of ribs to go.
Only the best baby back ribs are smoked
to perfection in-house. They will make an amazing meal and just
have to be finished off on the BBQ or in the oven.
A full rack is $13.95 and half rack $8.95.
Spent Grains
I also receive a number of requests for our
spent grain bread. Since we are not really equipped to bake it too often it is
usually only made for special occasions.
If anyone would like to try it themselves, I
would be happy to supply them with all the spent grain they need. Also, if
anyone knows a farmer who may be in the market for all our spent grains please
let me know.
When we are done with it in the brewery it makes
great animal feed so it is a shame to throw it away.
Ontario Craft Brewers' Association
An association of 25
Ontario craft brewers has been formed and the Granite is a member. This is an
association that will concentrate on the promotion and development of small
Ontario brewers.
\The
group will work with Government, the LCBO and the Beer Store among others so
craft brewers might have a fighting chance in a market dominated by “the big
guys”.
The Association is funded by membership fees
and a commitment from the provincial Ontario government of $1,000,000 a year
for 5 years.
You may have seen the print ads (if you would
like a poster let me know) and heard the radio ads.

their web site:

Bring Your Own Wine and Take Home the Rest
We are now licensed as a “Bring Your Own Wine”
establishment. Dining customers can bring their own wine to the Granite. There
is a $10 corkage fee per 750ml bottle. Due to government regulations, only
unopened commercially made wine is allowed.
We would be happy to
re-cork any unfinished wine bottle (whether you bring it in or buy it here) for
you to take home.
Granite Gift Boxes

Are you having trouble coming up with an appropriate
gift for that beer-loving friend or family member?
Consider a Granite
Gift Box, which includes a growler of Granite Ale, 4 Granite pint glasses and
coasters.
It is priced at $30.00 and is available in our
retail store. You can take a full growler or an empty one with a Growler Fill
Certificate to let your friend decide which beer.
We have T-shirts,
sweatshirts, glassware, gift certificates and our course BEER
available in the store

Sweet Squash and
Beer Soup
This soup was featured at the latest Brewers’
Banquet and we had several request for the recipe. So here it is. It is based
on the Roasted Butternut Squash and Beer Soup in Stephen Beaumont’s Brewpub
Cookbook, page 47.
Serves 6-8
2 large butternut squash, peel and dice (approx.
2” pieces)
2 sweet potatoes, peel and dice
1 large onion
1 tsp garlic puree
1 tbs fresh thyme
½ cup brown sugar
1 cup flour
½ litre beer (suggest ¼ Growler of Granite
Peculiar, consume the rest during preparation)
2 cups vegetable oil
2 cups 35% cream
Salt and pepper to taste
In a large bowl place squash, sweet potato,
onion, thyme, garlic and brown sugar. Add vegetable oil and toss. Add flour
and toss some more. Place all ingredients on a baking tray and bake at 350 F for
½ hour.
Place vegetables in a large pot with 2 litres of
vegetable or chicken stock and ½ litre of beer (Granite Peculiar). Bring to a
boil, simmer for ½ hour at low to medium heat. Strain liquid, puree vegetables,
bring liquid to a boil, add puree vegetable, simmer for 15 minutes and pass
through a strainer. At service add 2 cups of 35% cream.
Enjoy.
Eat Smart Award
The Granite has just received the Eat Smart award from
the Toronto Public Health Department. This award is given “to

100% smoke free dining and offer healthier food choices”. The
award is offered in conjunction with the Heart and Stroke Foundation
and the Canadian Cancer Society. If you would like to read more about

GRANITE BEER STORE IS OPEN
We are pleased
to announce our retail store is open and you can now enjoy all Granite
ales at home as well as at the pub.
We are offering our
beer in 1.9 litre “growlers”, priced at $11.50 including tax, plus a $4.00
refundable deposit on the growler.
The store is open
11.30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday – Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
They are great for a
dinner party or BBQ, but you don’t really need any excuse. The store came about
after Ontario government regulations changed to allow breweries to open a “Tied
House” restaurant at the site of the brewery. Since brewpubs were not allowed
to sell off-site we switched our licence to a full brewery with a tied house and
retail store. We can also sell to other pubs.
